Happy Days ‘Jump the Shark’ Writer Defends His Work

September 12, 2010

The phrase “jumped the shark” has come to mean that precise moment when a TV show (or more broadly any human endeavor in sports, politics, media) went too far and began going downhill.

But many people don’t realize that the phrase refers to an actual episode in 1977 from the TV show Happy Days when Fonzie literally “jumped a shark” on water skis. There is even a website http://www.jumptheshark.com devoted to the fatal missteps of hundreds of other TV programs.

Today comes an article in the Los Angeles Times by Fred Fox, Jr., the writer of that Happy Days episode defending it, but conceding that the phrase, much to his embarrassment, has now entered the lexicon of public culture.

Check it out HERE.

Stephen King Talks About Who Should Star In The Dark Tower Movies?

September 9, 2010

With news that Stephen King’s enormously popular book series The Dark Tower will be coming to a big and small screen near you, Entertainment Weekly reached out to the bestselling author to get a few more answers about the highly-anticipated project. Here’s what he had to say:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The Dark Tower is such a dense series — did you always think it needed more than a single movie or TV show treatment?

STEPHEN KING: I always thought it would take more than a single movie, but I didn’t see this solution coming — i.e., several movies and TV series. It was Ron [Howard] and Akiva [Goldsman]‘s idea. Once it was raised, I thought at once it was the solution.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What about Ron Howard and NBC makes them a good fit for the franchise?

STEPHEN KING: When working as a director, Ron is very similar to the way I work as a writer. We both tell honest stories that have (I flatter myself) style and substance but not a lot of show-offy frills.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In a perfect world, who would play Roland? Eddie? Susannah? Jake?

STEPHEN KING: The Twilight cast, of course! Just kidding. I haven’t got as far as casting in my thoughts, but when I write about Susannah Dean, I always kind of see Angela Bassett in my mind’s eye. Mostly I just want good people in those parts. Ron Howard will find them, I’m sure.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: And who would you want to play?

STEPHEN KING: I’d love to be the voice of Blaine the Mono.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There’s a lot of blood in the series — how much is the TV series going to be censored? It likely would have been easier to join forces with a network without restrictions, à la HBO, no?

STEPHEN KING: I don’t see that as a problem at all! We’ll have just enough latitude to make a great series. I’ve worked in network TV before, and every time I was squeezed a little, it just made me look for creative solutions. Besides, I always like to play in the biggest auditorium available! New OnStar Coming With Facebook

September 9, 2010

GM’s next generation OnStar will get a major upgrade and challenge Ford’s Sync system with infotainment options. In addition to OnStar’s well-known unparalleled route guidance and safety assistance services, the new system will get apps like Facebook.

A Bloomberg story outlines the differences in the new version of OnStar, which should focus its attention on more features designed to make Sync less of a deal maker for their rivals and outline the advantages of OnStar’s always-on fat data pipe connection.

They’re reporting it will add text message voice translation and, somehow, Facebook. Will you be able to “like” places you see on the road or “share” routes with your friends? We’ll find out soon. (From Gizmodo)

Google Announces Instant Search Results Feature

September 8, 2010

Google revealed “Google Instant” today and it’s pretty much just how it sounds. You begin typing your query into Google’s search box and your search results change in real-time with each additional letter you add, displayed dynamically on the search results page.

“We want search to be fun, fast, and interactive,” said Google’s Marissa Mayer. Currently, the average user takes nine seconds to enter a search query, about one second for Google to return results, and another 15 seconds for the user to make a selection. Total query time: 25 seconds.

With Google Instant, the search engine fetches predictive results to reduce the overall query time by around five seconds. Mayer used the example of searching for “fauvism,” which returned relevant results once she’d typed only the first four letters.

Google Instant will be rolling out today in the US, with an international rollout to follow within the next week. A mobile version is planned as well, due sometime this fall.

Stephen King’s Dark Tower Film and TV Projects Officially Announced

September 8, 2010

Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television Entertainment have acquired the rights to produce three films and a television series based on the seven epic novels, short stories and comic books from Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.

Ron Howard will direct the first film and the first season of television, which will be written by Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman will produce the film through his Weed Road Pictures with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment. Howard, Grazer and Goldsman will executive produce the television series for Universal Media Studios. Kerry Foster will executive produce the first film for Weed Road Pictures along with Todd Hallowell and Erica Huggins for Imagine Entertainment.

“I’ve been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world,” said King. “Ron, Akiva, Brian along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for the The Dark Tower series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in The Dark Tower that fans have come to love.”

The Dark Tower is Stephen King’s opus of seven bestselling novels with, to date, more than 30 million copies sold in 40 countries. The novels incorporate themes from multiple genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror and adventure. After the series was completed, a prequel of comic books based on one of the characters was also published.

“Building a franchise home for The Dark Tower is an exciting opportunity for this studio, and we’re thrilled that Stephen has entrusted us to bring his beloved novels to the big screen,” said Fogelson.

“Stephen King is a brilliant storyteller who creates imaginary worlds that resonate with the broadest audiences across ages and demographics,” said Gaspin. “We are thrilled to partner with our colleagues in the film division and Brian, Ron and Akiva to bring Stephen’s vision to the largest audience possible through this innovative multi-platform collaboration.”

Howard, Grazer and Goldsman are planning for the first film in the trilogy to be immediately followed by a television series that will bridge the second film. After the second film, the television series will pick up allowing viewers to explore the adventures of the protagonist as a young man as a bridge to the third film and beyond.

“We are excited to have found partners at Universal who understand and embrace our approach to King’s remarkable epic,” said Howard. “By using both the scope and scale of theatrical filmmaking and the intimacy of television we hope to more comprehensively do justice to the characters, themes and amazing sequences King has given us in The Dark Tower novels. It might be the challenge of a lifetime but clearly a thrilling one to take on and explore.”

Cold Stone Creamery & Make-A-Wish Foundation Invites You To Participate In The “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social On September 30th

September 8, 2010

Cold Stone Creamery and the Make-A-Wish Foundation are inviting the country to help make Kate’s wish come true by participating in the “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social.” Kate, an 11-year-old with a life-threatening congenital spinal-cord condition, wished to be the Cold Stone Tastemaster and she’s hoping ice cream lovers around the country will dig into the exclusive ice cream Creation that she developed.

Throughout September, every Cold Stone store nationwide will sell paper wish stars for $1 each. The month-long fundraiser will culminate in the ninth-annual “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social” on Sept. 30th.

During the social, Cold Stone locations will give away three-ounce portions of Kate’s Creation from 5-8 p.m., while encouraging guests to make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Cold Stone Creamery has supported the Make-A-Wish Foundation since 2002, generating more than $3.6 million in donations.

An ice cream connoisseur, Kate discovered that a wish kid has the responsibility of creating an exclusive Creation for the “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social.” When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked Kate for her most heartfelt wish, she knew she was the perfect candidate for the position.

In March, Kate traveled to the Cold Stone Creamery World Headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz., to work with the Cold Stone Tastemaster to mix up this year’s Make-A-Wish Creation. Kate was named “Junior Tastemaster” and invented Kate’s Creation: caramel apple ice cream mixed with graham cracker pie crust, chocolate shavings and apple pie filling.

Her exclusive Creation will be featured at Cold Stone locations throughout September. “My wish day at Cold Stone was the most delicious day of my life!” Kate exclaimed.

Ice cream lovers and supporters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation are encouraged to be part of Kate’s wish and visit their local Cold Stone Creamery on Thursday, Sept. 30th.

Pixar Posts Defunct Newt Artwork

September 7, 2010

Back in February, reports surfaced that Pixar would cease production on “Newt,” a romantic comedy about a pair of endangered amphibians, that was to have been the directorial debut of sound whiz Gary Rydstrom. Rydstrom had previously directed the charming Pixar short “Lifted” (about the alien abduction driver’s ed), which was nominated for an Academy Award.

On Friday afternoon before a long weekend, the Disney – Pixar Facebook page, posted the following:

“As most of you already know,” the post read, “‘Newt’ is no longer in development at Pixar. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t share some of the Pixar’s amazing artwork with our Facebook fans!”

See more art HERE. (Thanks for the tip Don)
