KFC debuted a new version of its most successful limited-time offer, the Double Down today, and this time the “sandwich” actually gets a bun.
The Doublicious, which Louisville-based KFC promoted to members of its e-mail club last week, launched today, and the company already is calling it the chain’s signature sandwich.
The new sandwich targets fans of the Double Down, as KFC’s e-mail promotion remarked, “If you thought our sandwich without the bun was a hit, wait until you see what we’re doing with a bun!”
The Original Recipe Doublicious will combine an Original Recipe fillet, Monterey Jack cheese, bacon and Colonel’s Sauce, just like the Double Down. But this time a sweet Hawaiian Bread roll will hold all the ingredients together. A Grilled Doublicious version will have a grilled fillet, Monterey Jack, lettuce and honey-mustard barbecue sauce.
The Double Down was an instant hit, selling nearly 10 million and garnering a tremendous amount of consumer and industry attention. KFC expects the same from the Doublicious.
“The great thing about the Double Down — aside from the obvious fact that KFC has sold more than 10 million of them — is that it really got people talking about KFC and sandwiches, and that is continuing,” KFC spokesman Rick Maynard said Monday in an e-mail to Nation’s Restaurant News. “The Doublicious isn’t even in our restaurants yet, and there is already a tremendous amount of chatter about it.”
He also confirmed that the Doublicious was tested in the Providence, R.I., and Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., markets, as was the Double Down before its April introduction.
Among consumer and media chatter about the Doublicious are comments from authors and readers of blogs like Consumerist implying that the new sandwich lacks the innovative punch of the Double Down. KFC refuted the notion that a bun makes its newest product just another chicken sandwich.
“The bottom line is that America is talking about KFC and our sandwiches, and that is a very good thing,” Maynard said. “Once Americans get a chance to try the Doublicious, we think they’ll agree that it is as good or better than any chicken sandwich in the fast-food business.”

In his thrilling debut, Christopher Farnsworth combines the current trend of supernatural fiction with the always popular political thriller. The president’s most loyal secret agent is Cade, a 140-year-old vampire who is dedicated to protecting the U.S. from supernatural threats. Farnsworth creates an entire secret history behind the major events of the late nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries, even hinting at a supernatural cause behind the 9/11 attacks.
In the present day, Zach Barrows, a rising political star caught canoodling with the president’s daughter, suddenly finds himself training to be Cade’s handler after tough, wise special agent William Griffin retires. As they try to stop Cade’s old nemesis, Dr. Johann Konrad, from creating an army of Frankensteinian monster soldiers, they uncover a deeper government conspiracy.

Microsoft announced this week that it has a patent for designing devices so that batteries can be inserted either way, regardless of polarity. Dubbed InstaLoad, Microsoft said, the technology is now available for license to other companies.
Further, the company said it will offer the license royalty-free to companies making products for people with hearing, vision, or learning disabilities.
Battery maker Duracell and flashlight manufacturer AE Light are among the first companies to license the technology, Microsoft said.
The technology appears to work simply enough, including both positive and negative contacts at both ends. A center contact at the top supports a positive charge, while the wider bottom contact supports negative polarity.
Microsoft bills it as particularly useful for devices that use a lot of batteries, that need to have batteries changed frequently, or that can be damaged if the batteries are inserted improperly.
Microsoft said InstaLoad can work with any cylindrical battery, disposable or rechargeable, including any standard ones like AA, AAA, C, and D cells, as well as less common ones like those used in some cameras.
Apple Inc. said today that a software fix for the iPhone 4 will correct an error in the way the devices display signal strength, in response to complaints of worse reception when iPhone 4 users picked up the device. This letter was posted on their website this morning:
Dear iPhone 4 Users,
The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.
To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.
At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?
We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.
Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.
To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.
We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4′s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.
As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.
We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.
Thank you for your patience and support.

Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.
The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.
On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.
Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

In the wake of the iPad, you better believe that Amazon’s Kindle division has been spending more than a few late nights pondering how the device can stay relevant in the future. Since they can’t simply integrate a color e-ink display or add other application based features overnight to the product line, it seems like the release of the latest Kindle DX ($379) is designed to get the Kindle back on the radar in the wake of the iPad hoopla.
What’s new about the new Kindle DX boils down to three things: a color case, contrast, and price. The new DX is now available in graphite, and features a new e-ink screen that boasts 50% improved contrast ratio. It’s also being priced $100 less.
The new Kindle DX is available for pre-order now and officially goes on sale July 7th.
