The iVictrola

May 13, 2010

The iVictrola combines cutting edge technology of the early 20th century with the 21st century. Conceived by the New York City designer Matt Richmond, he took his love for vintage turntables one step further.

To use, simply place the phone in the dock of the walnut base and turn on your favorite tunes. The sound is carried from a hole in the base, amplified by the metal Magnavox horn to fill the room. There are no electronics, just old-fashioned acoustics.

Design Within Reach advertised a limited edition model for $425 which sold out immediately. Matt has a web site to contact him directly.

Recycled Coca Cola Chair

May 12, 2010

Coke has teamed up with furniture manufacturer Emeco to create a special version of the iconic Navy Chair. Each chair will be made out of rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) derived from 111 recycled Coke bottles along with some pigment and glass fiber for extra strength.

Gregg Buchbinder of Emeco explains, “When Coke came to me with this project I jumped on it. It’s a huge investment for a small company, but we have the potential of reusing the PET from about 3 million plastic bottles a year. That’s a lot of bottles and a lot of chairs too. The new chair is the strongest, and most beautiful we can make. We’ve turned something you throw away into something you want and can keep for a long, long time.”

Liz Lowe, Citizenship Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain said: “This beautiful 111 Navy Chair reinforces Coca-Cola’s commitment to sustainability. This innovative project is part of our vision to recover and reuse all of our bottles and cans and another example of how our packaging can have real value through recycling to be  used again and again.”

The chairs will be available in June.

The Making of ‘Exile on Main Street’: The New Issue of Rolling Stone

May 12, 2010

The Rolling Stones had a Number One album and a few legal snafus under their belt when they fled England in search of a proper spot to record in 1971. Where they landed (the South of France) and what they did there (channeled notorious debauchery into some of the best work of their career) would become the stuff of rock & roll legend. It became Exile on Main Street.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards look back on making their gritty 1972 masterpiece — which is due May 18th as a reissue featuring 10 outtakes — in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on sale at newsstands now.

10 Iconic Frank Frazetta Works

May 11, 2010

Frank Frazetta passed away on May 10th at the age of 82. His impact on American comics was enormous: the entire modern sword-and-sorcery genre is arguably directly descended from his paintings.

Frazetta came out of the American adventure-strip cartooning tradition–Alex Raymond’s artwork, in particular, was prominently echoed in his dynamic, explosive images of sinewy bodies in motion. He also served as Al Capp’s assistant on “Li’l Abner” for years.

Once Frazetta came into his own, though, he pretty much invented an entire category of artwork. An undeniable master painter, he applied his mastery to his passion for the fantasy art genre: muscular sword-wielding barbarians, lurking horrors, voluptuous damsels in distress, armies in monstrous armor, every detail in each of his images writhing into life. A single painting, he found, could evoke an entire story–an entire world–which may be why he mostly stuck with cover illustrations. The iconic depictions of Conan aren’t Robert E. Howard’s descriptions of his character; they’re Frazetta’s cover illustrations for the ’60s reprints of Howard’s stories. He was the most heavy metal artist American comics have ever seen, and he will be missed.

David Sedaris Story Gets Adapted for Film

May 11, 2010

Back in 2002, David Sedaris’s Me Talk Pretty One Day was going to be turned into a movie, when the humorist, essayist, and memoirist pulled the plug because his family wasn’t particularly amped on being the subject of a major motion picture.

Now, one of Sedaris’s stories will finally be adapted for the big screen, by screenwriter and director Kyle Patrick Alvarez. The essay, “C.O.G.” (Child of God), from the collection Naked, traces Sedaris’s adventures cutting stones into clocks the shape of Oregon. We hope, somehow, Alvarez finds a way to make use of Sedaris’s uncanny talent for impersonating of Billie Holiday.

Carole King & James Taylor: Live At The Troubadour CD/DVD

May 11, 2010

In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles’ newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” was topping the charts and King’s landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar.

Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band “The Section” (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue’s 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live at the Troubadour, a special 2-disc CD/DVD now available from Hear Music/Concord Music Group. This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs and 75 minutes of pristine video and audio including stunning performances of the pair’s most beloved hits such as Carole King’s “So Far Away,” “It’s Too Late,” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” as well as James Taylor’s “Carolina in My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” and “Fire and Rain,” to name just a few.

Wired Magazine’s Sneak Peek: Hands-On With iPhone OS 4

May 11, 2010

Although Apple’s next iPhone operating system is at least a month away from release, Wired.com got a hands-on peek at the latest beta and found some interesting goodies that have not been officially announced.

Most notably, the iPhone OS 4 beta 3 software includes a brand new iPod widget and a file-sharing feature that was previously exclusive to the iPad.

Other new features we tested were those on display during Apple’s recent iPhone event: multitasking, folders, universal e-mail, wallpaper and camera zoom. Taken together, they paint a picture of an operating system that is well on its way to a major upgrade, one that will greatly increase the usability of Apple’s growing family of iPhone OS-based devices.

The iPhone OS is Apple’s mobile platform, which powers the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. After releasing the iPad, iPhone OS 4 will be Apple’s next move to do battle in an increasingly competitive mobile landscape. Currently, Apple’s biggest rival is Google’s Android OS, and upcoming contenders include Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and HP, which recently acquired Palm.

Apple has said the iPhone OS 4 upgrade will be available this summer for iPhones (3G and 3GS models) and the third-generation iPod Touch, and in the fall for the iPad. (The older iPod Touch devices and the first-generation iPhone will not support the OS.)

Apple has released previous iPhone OS upgrades during its Worldwide Developers Conference in years past. Apple’s upcoming WWDC kicks off June 7, so expect the official upgrade to become available for download around then.

Meanwhile, take a look HERE at what Wired found in the beta to get an idea of what to expect.
