Conan O’Brien To Return To Late Night On TBS

April 12, 2010

Conan O’Brien, the former host of NBC’s “Tonight Show,” who lost the program to Jay Leno earlier this year, has signed a deal for a new late-night program on TBS. O’Brien’s show will start in November at 11 p.m. George Lopez, the comedian who currently occupies that slot, will have his show move to midnight.

“In three months, I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly,” O’Brien said in a statement.

The deal with TBS is sure to catch many by surprise. Most industry observers expected O’Brien to land at Fox. While Fox’s top entertainment executives Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly were on board with going after O’Brien, persuading Fox’s affiliates to carry the show was going to be more challenging. That’s because those stations make a lot of money from the reruns they currently run at 11 p.m. This was also an issue for the stations owned by Fox itself.

Sharp Images By Artist Mark Evans

April 12, 2010

This is the London based artist Mark Evans

Why is he holding a knife?  It is the tool of his trade.

Using only a couple of knives, a handful of scalpels and some special waxes, Mark Evans turns pieces of leather into unique works of art.

All Mark Evans needs to create art out of cow hide is a knife, time and inspiration. Days, sometimes weeks, even months go by until his work is completed, but after all the etching and carving, a masterpiece is revealed. As if he he’s painting with a blade, Mark is able to create mindblowing tonal pieces.

It all started when he was just seven years old, growing up in the Welsh Mountains. His grandfather gave him a knife and he began carving shapes in tree bark. Later he studied fine art, in London, and although he worked with more conventional materials, he could never get over his passion for playing with knives.

Take a look at some of his most important leather paintings and also check out his official site.

New Video Game Releases: April 11th – April 16th

April 12, 2010

This week there’s something old, something new… err… make that something old that’s completely new.

Ubisoft’s anticipated Splinter Cell: Conviction hits shelves Tuesday.  A welcome departure for the series, Conviction sees its hero, Sam Fisher, going rogue to bring down some ultra-painful, chin-smashin-thru-urinal style vengeance to bastards that killed his daughter.  Not backed by the agency this go around, Sam abandons the usual fancy gadgets in favor of things such as a broken piece of car mirror to look around corners.  A  new “mark and execute” tagging system that Sam drop two bad guys in the blink of an eye, Fisher may just reclaim the rank of bad-ass that he once was on the original Xbox.

The other release of note is Grand Theft Auto IV’s two DLC expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony finally become available for PS3 and PC individually as DLC or collectively on retail disc as Episodes from Liberty City.

This week’s count: 14 games in all.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony (PC, PS3)

The Cricut Expression

April 11, 2010

The Cricut Expression ($349.99) is a simple to use device that can cut letters, shapes, and phrases in impressive sizes using the 12″ x 24″ mat or the 12″ x 12″ mat. The possibilities are endless with this large machine, allowing you to create bigger die cuts for classroom decor, scrapbook layouts, signage, and so much more.

I highly recommend the Expression because it enables you to do more intricate piecing designs, has larger sizing options and is computer compatible with the Cricut software. It cuts in ¼” increments from ¼” tall to 24” tall. It also cuts mirror images as well as many other features. There are many choices for cartridges as well. I used the Storybook cartridge for the birthday projects below.

The following card was made with the Wild Card cartridge.

All in all, when you consider the money and time you save by not having to hand cut your designs or buying expensive cards or gift bags, it’s clear that the Cricut Expression is a great investment for any paper crafter, both amateur or professional. (Written by Patricia Fire)

The Titles & Covers of The Final Two 39 Clues Books

April 11, 2010

Here are the titles and covers of the final two 39 Clues adventure books.

Book 9: Storm Warning, by Linda Sue Park, comes out on May 25th.

In this thrilling ninth installment, Amy and Dan hit the high seas as they follow the trail of some infamous ancestors to track down a long lost treasure. However, the real prize isn’t hidden in a chest. It’s the discovery of the Madrigals’ most dangerous secret and, even more shockingly, the true identity of the mysterious man in black.

Book 10: Into the Gauntlet, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, arrives in stores on August 31st.

Are Amy and Dan ready to face the truth about the Cahills and the key to their unmatched power? After a whirlwind race that’s taken them across five continents, Amy and Dan face the most the difficult challenge yet- a task no Cahill dared to imagine. When faced with a choice that could change the future of the world, can two kids succeed where 500 years worth of famous ancestors failed?

The  multimedia series—each volume written by  different children’s book author—is phenomenally popular in the 8-12 year-old set. It centers around Amy and Dan Cahill, a brother and sister who are, at their grandmother’s behest, searching the world for the 39 clues to the Cahill family’s power. Dreamworks has secured the movie rights to The 39 Clues; Steven Spielberg may direct.

Illustrated Cities by Blanca Gómez

April 11, 2010

The graphic designer and illustator Blanca Gómez lives and works in Madrid, Spain. She created these whimsical and retro travel posters that feature the cities of New York, London and Paris.

The name of her website is “Cosas Mínimas“, which means “Tiny Things” in Spanish. She thinks that name explains her work better than herself.

Hopefully the prints will be available when her Etsy shop opens in mid April!

April 11, 2010

Last weekend, TrustoCorp, randomly placed one hundred subversively branded products onto the shelves and in the aisles of bodegas, delis, and Kmarts throughout New York City.

Google’s Search Stories Video Creator

April 10, 2010

Google recently launched a new feature called the Search Stories Video Creator. The new feature prompts you to input up to seven search queries spread across Google’s search features (including Images, Maps, and standard web search), choose a song, and it generates a video in the same style as Google’s other Search Stories.

The whole process only takes a few minutes and the tool automatically uploads your video to YouTube if you desire.

Here is a video that I created for THE FIRE WIRE.

THE FIRE WIRE Comic Book Pick of The Week: S.H.I.E.L.D. # 1

April 10, 2010

Leonardo Da Vinci was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. So was Sir Isaac Newton. So were Imhotep and Zhang Heng and Galileo and many other geniuses throughout time. They were the first heroes to defeat Galactus and the Brood and turn Celestials back. They saved the world long before Captain America or Iron Man were ever born, but what does this mean to our heroes of today? What does this mean to Nick Fury?

Do not miss this Marvel Comics masterpiece written by Jonathan Hickman and penciled by Dustin Weaver that fans will be talking about for decades to come.

Issue # 1 hit comic stores this week and the first printing has sold out from  the distributor (a few issues are still available at comic stores – so snatch them up now).  A second printing has already gone to press.
