Hong Kong Architect Turns Shoebox Apartment Into 24 Rooms

April 25, 2010

Award-winning Hong Kong architect Chang has managed to squeeze 24 rooms — including a steam room and home cinema — into his Swiss army knife-style home.

Chang, 46, turned the tiny flat he has occupied since the age of 14 into what he calls his “domestic transformer,” and in the process offered a vision for how one of the world’s most densely-populated cities could better use its limited space.

“The key idea is that everyone could look into their home more carefully and into how better to optimize their resources, because space is a resource,” he said.

“There is no use making your home as if it is a perfect show flat but at the same time never using the space,” he said.

Chang has tackled the lack of room by replacing the flat’s walls with a series of accordion-like sliding units, hung from metal tracks on the ceiling, that can be moved about to form a variety of configurations.

The partitions conceal drawers for clothes, shelves for toiletries and racks for thousands of CDs and DVDs.

Chang grabs a handle near his wall-mounted television and suddenly the wall itself is moving across the polished granite floor to the center of the room, revealing a folding laminate worktop and well-stocked minibar facing the kitchen behind.

The flat can be one big, open-plan studio or, with very little effort, an arena of fold-down surfaces, seats and beds.

The concept was born of necessity. Growing up in the flat with six others, Chang had to be flexible.

“I have three younger sisters, so we all lived here. Originally there were three bedrooms, a living room and a dining room,” he said. “My sisters occupied one room, my parents another room and the third was actually not for me, it was for an outsider — my parents sub-let it to somebody else to get more revenue. So actually I slept in the living room.”

Chang still lives in the flat, and has spent his adult life reinventing his small corner of a 19-story 1960s tower block in Hong Kong’s bustling Sai Wan Ho district.

The architect believes his innovations can show even the poorest families how to improve their domestic arrangements and is determined that his book My 32m² Apartment: A 30-Year Transformation will influence new housing.

Lack of space is a huge problem in Hong Kong, a metropolis of 7 million, reflecting rocketing rental prices, at least before the recent downturn.

The optimization of space means Chang can afford to squeeze in luxuries not usually seen in Hong Kong’s tiny apartments, including a glass shower which doubles as a steam room, a 1.9m bathtub and a reasonably-sized kitchen.

There is even a wall-sized cinema screen, raised by remote control to reveal a huge, yellow-tinted window which gives the flat the illusion of being washed in warm sunlight, even on the cloudiest day.

Chang’s experiment in flexible living began after he graduated from the University of Hong Kong, where he had been studying architecture.

Chang has renovated four times, on each occasion with a bigger budget and more innovative approach, turning a HK$350,000 shoebox into a mini-palace worth around HK$1.3 million.

Top 10 Bad Beverage Ideas

April 23, 2010

Depending on who you ask, it was one of the greatest marketing blunders in history or an unlikely stroke of corporate genius. Either way, April 23, 1985, stands as one of the most significant dates in business history — the date the 99-year-old Coca-Cola company announced it was scrapping its original soda formula for a newer, sweeter version. In blind taste tests, consumers generally preferred “new Coke” over the original drink and competitor Pepsi, but the company severely underestimated the nation’s sentimental attachment to the iconic American brand

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment sold 1.5 million Blu-ray units of James Cameron’s Avatar on Earth Day, the film’s first day of home video release. The 1.5 million units is a new record, topping The Dark Knight’s 600,000 Blu-ray units sold its first day in 2008. Avatar easily surpassed The Dark Knight as the fastest-selling Blu-ray DVD and sold more than 4 million total DVDs on its first day.

Retailers sold out of 60% of their Blu-ray inventory, while they moved out about 50% of their Avatar DVDs.

Home Tree Initiative Kicks Off With James Cameron on Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary

April 22, 2010

Today on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, THE FIRE WIRE was invited to Twentieth Century Fox Studios to cover the release of James Cameron’s AVATAR on DVD and the Home Tree initiative.

The goal of this initiative is for fifteen countries to commit to planting one million trees native to each region by the end of 2010. Those who buy a copy of AVATAR will find a code to register online, allowing them to adopt one of the trees and see where in the world it will be planted.

The Home Tree Initiative kicked off with the director James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, members of the AVATAR cast and several hundred children planting a symbolic tree on the studio lot that represents the future trees that will be planted worldwide throughout the year. The tree was marked by a ceremonial plaque.

“This film fell on fertile soil all around the world,” Cameron stated. “Even though it takes place on Pandora, it really takes place on Earth. These aren’t partisan issues. We’re all a part of this. “This tree isn’t just symbolic. Reforestation is something we need to take very seriously.”

The global environmental themes of AVATAR resonated with moviegoers last year making the film the highest grossing movie of all time.  Now people can take this experience home with them on the new AVATAR DVD and Blu-ray.

Cameron would not say what his next project would be but did confirm that AVATAR 2 would be released in the near future and the plot would rely heavily on Pandora’s oceans.

We want to thank 20th Century Fox for inviting us to this uplifting event. It was a thrill to meet and and talk to James Cameron.

The LOST Creators Explain How They Did It And What’s Going On

April 22, 2010

In 2004, ABC called on producer J.J. Abrams to create a prime-time drama that capitalized on the success of Survivor something tropical, Cast Away-ish, and closer to Lord of the Flies than Gilligan’s Island. Oh, they asked, and could you make it a towering, mainstream megahit, please? What executives got from the guy best known for a brainy college soap (Felicity) and an even brainier spy soap (Alias) was LOST, a fiendishly obscure, cast-of-thousands epic about … well … to say it’s about people on a magic island is selling it short. To say it’s about Everything — which its adherents swear it is — is a bit grandiose. So let’s just say it’s about destiny. And metaphysics. And quantum physics. And leadership, torture, time travel, synchronicity, Skinner boxes, geodesic domes, polar bears, doomsday equations, comic books, the Casimir effect, and the no-less-potent Cass Elliot effect. It was weird. Even weirder: It was a hit. A towering, mainstream megahit. You’d think a show like this could happen only in some alternate television universe. Maybe so. Maybe for the past six years we’ve been living in that universe. That would be so LOST.

When LOST leaves the airwaves on May 23rd, its creators have pledged never to speak of it again. It’s for the best. That’s why Wired Magazine is stopping time and making that fidgety, spatiotemporally promiscuous island sit still long enough them to pay tribute to its mysteries.

How Ben & Jerry’s Chooses New Flavors

April 22, 2010

The cult of Ben & Jerry’s is a friendly one, and their Sabbath is new flavor day. With names like “Magic Brownies” and “Imagine Whirled Peace” the flavors of the Vermont-based ice cream company are known for being … out there. On April 20th, Ben & Jerry’s introduced its newest flavor, Bonnaroo Buzz. If you’ve been waiting for “light coffee and malt ice creams with whiskey caramel swirls and English toffee pieces,” it’s here. If such a flavor had never occurred to you, that’s why people like Eric Fredette exist.

Fredette is one of Ben & Jerry’s “flavor gurus.” (Not feeling the whimsy? Fine. He works in research and development.) It fell to him to create a flavor that could tie in with the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, held every June in Tennessee. Once a venue primarily for jam bands like Phish (which incidentally has a very popular flavor named after it), Bonnaroo has since become one of the nation’s biggest music fests. Ben & Jerry’s marketing pros brought him some suggestions, but Fredette arrived at the concoction after doing his own research.

“You can expect to see some familiar faces on screen and big names behind the scenes,” said Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “The show will unleash MAD’s irreverent take on pop culture and today’s headlines, and feature classic characters including Alfred E. Neuman and Spy Vs. Spy. Our partners at Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network are helping DC Entertainment revitalize the cherished MAD brand across all media.”

DC Comics’ Young Justice Coming To The Cartoon Network In 2010

April 21, 2010

Earlier today at Cartoon Network’s Upfront presentation in New York, it was announced that the new “Young Justice” animated series will debut on Cartoon Network during the 2010 – 2011 season.

The series will focus on Robin, Superboy, Artemis, Kid Flash, Miss Martian and Aqualad as they attempt to prove that they have what it takes to become the next generation of the Justice League. Sam Register (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold”) is the executive producer with Greg Weisman (“The Spectacular Spider-Man”) and Brandon Vietti (“The Batman”) on board as producers.

The “Young Justice” comic book series debuted in 1998 and ran for 55 issues. Although the concept was created by Todd DeZago and artist Todd Nauck, the majority of the series was written by prolific comic book scribe Peter David.

It’s interesting to note that Wonder Girl and Secret — two of the primary characters in the “Young Justice” comic — are missing from the animated lineup. Additionally, Arrowette has apparently been renamed “Artemis.”

The animated “Young Justice” also appears to be heavily influenced by the “Teen Titans” relaunch by Geoff Johns, that featured Impluse as Kid Flash and later introduced Miss Martian to the DC Universe.

Movie Posters Re-Imagined With the Stars Originally Cast

April 21, 2010

Not to say it wouldn’t be the contemporary classic that it is today, but ‘The Matrix’ would’ve taken us down a whole different rabbit hole had Will Smith not passed on the role of Neo, opening the door for Keanu Reeves to don the dark trench coat.

How about if Ralph Macchio went time-traveling as Marty McFly, or Tom Cruise danced his heart out as Ren McCormack in Footloose?

Moviefone thought it would be amusing to portray 15 movie posters re-imagined with the stars originally cast. Check them out HERE.

Here Is The New Redesigned $100 Bill

April 21, 2010

The U.S. Treasury has unveiled a new $100 dollar bill that officials say is key to staying ahead of counterfeiters.

Speaking at the new C-note’s debut, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said it’s a challenge to guard against counterfeiting as technology becomes more sophisticated and more dollars flow overseas.

Staying ahead of bogus bills is a job that has become “more complex in recent years as technology advances and U.S. dollar flows expand and increase,” Bernanke said. He said as many as two-thirds of all $100 bills circulate outside the United States.

The Treasury has incorporated two advanced and easy-to-use security features which offer a simple and subtle way to verify that a note is real:

- 3-D Security Ribbon: A blue ribbon on the front of the $100 note with images of bells and 100s. Tilt the note back and forth while focusing on the blue ribbon. You will see the bells change to 100s as they move. When you tilt the note back and forth, the bells and 100s move side to side. If you tilt it side to side, they move up and down. The ribbon is woven into the paper, not printed on it.

- Bell in the Inkwell: A color-shifting bell, inside a copper inkwell, on the front of the note. The inkwell and bell are both copper until you move the $100 note. Tilt it to see the bell change from copper to green, an effect which makes the bell seem to appear and disappear within the inkwell.

Three highly effective security features from the old design were retained in the new $100 note:

- Portrait Watermark: Hold the note to light and look for a faint image of Benjamin Franklin around the blank space to the right of the portrait. The image is visible from either side of the note.

- Security Thread: Hold the note to light to see an embedded thread that runs vertically to the left of the portrait. The letters USA and the numeral 100 appear in an alternating pattern and are visible along the thread from both sides of the note. The thread glows pink when illuminated by ultraviolet light.

Color-Shifting 100: Tilt the note to see the numeral 100 in the lower right corner of the front of the note shift from copper to green.

The new bills goes into circulation on Feb. 10, 2011.

U.S. Treasury to Unveil New $100 Bill Today

April 21, 2010

The new design for the $100 note will make its debut on Wednesday, April 21st during a ceremony at the Department of the Treasury’s Cash Room.

The U.S. government redesigns currency in order to stay ahead of counterfeiters and protect the public. Decisions about the redesign of each denomination are guided by the government’s close evaluation of the range of ongoing counterfeit threats, whether from digital technology or traditional printing presses.

The unveiling of the $100 note is the first step in a global multi-government agency public education program implemented by the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Board and the U.S. Secret Service, to educate those who use the $100 note about its changes before it begins circulating. The $100 note is the highest value denomination of U.S. currency in general circulation, and it circulates broadly around the world. Public education is an important component of the government’s redesigned currency program because a well informed public is our first and best line of defense against counterfeiting.

You will be able to see the new bill at www.newmoney.gov beginning at 10:30 a.m. EDT on April 21.

Avatar Sequel Will Explore Pandora’s Oceans

April 20, 2010

Having thoroughly explored Pandora’s ground-level flora and fauna in Avatar, director James Cameron plans to plumb the distant moon’s watery depths in the sequel. In the follow-up to his 3-D sci-fi blockbuster, which is set for DVD release on Thursday, Cameron and his team will go deep, and wet, to conjure a vision of aquatic alien life forms.

“I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora,” Cameron told the Los Angeles Times‘ Hero Complex blog.

The seas of Pandora “will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest,” the filmmaker said. “I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”

Cameron’s fascination with oceans stretches back more than a decade. He developed much of the 3-D technology used in Avatar while working on his post-Titanic documentary, Ghosts of the Abyss, and took moviegoers beneath the sea in the 1992 epic The Abyss.

Cameron also confirmed plans to bring Avatar back to theaters in August in an expanded version that includes six extra minutes of footage.
