Frank Darabont Discusses His Next Thriller

August 6, 2009

Frank Darabont’s The Mist was one of the best Stephen King adaptations since, well, since his last Stephen King adaptations. Unfortunately, it didn’t draw the crowds one would expect from the man who brought The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to cinematic life. But that’s not stopping its director from prepping his next thriller. This time, however, Darabont’s tackling a medium other than the silver screen. Read what Darabont’s next project is HERE.

Second City’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

August 6, 2009

As part of its upcoming fiftieth anniversary, Chicago’s Second City comedy theater will host a one-night-only Chicago reunion of the cast of the iconic SCTV comedy series, featuring personal appearances by Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis, Martin Short and Dave Thomas, Second City is to announce later today.

There will also be special guests at both live SCTV shows, which are slated for Friday Dec. 11 on Second City’s mainstage at 1616 N. Wells St.

Also expected to perform on stage and/or sit on panels during the anniversary weekend: Jim Belushi, Jeff Garlin, Alan Arkin, Dan Castellaneta, Tim Meadows, Jack McBrayer, Tim Kazurinsky, Richard Kind, Fred Willard, Dick Schaal, Scott Adsit, David Rasche, David Steinberg, Robert Klein and many others. Invitations have also been sent to other powerful Second City alumni, including Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Rachel Dratch, Steve Carell, Mike Myers, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.

Many of those high-wattage stars are expected to show up for special alumni shows slated for Sat. Dec. 12 on both the mainstage and the attached e.t.c. stage. Panels on various aspects of Second City and the history of the theater and its art will take place all weekend.

All of the shows are billed as benefits for the Second City Alumni Fund (a fund that supports former Second City employees who have hit hard times) and thus will command a hefty but yet-to-be-announced ticket price. Tickets are not yet on sale, but they will be available to the public.

SCTV Canadian sketch-comedy show, originally an offshoot of Second City’s Toronto company, was created by Bernie Sahlins and Andrew Alexander and aired in syndication throughout Canada and the U.S. Alexander is the current proprietor and executive producer of the Second City.

The December event will feature the entire original SCTV cast (along with Short, who joined the show in its fourth season), with the exception of the late John Candy. Short, who joined the show in its fourth season, will take Candy’s place.

“This is like a high school reunion with all the good and bad friendships, the love of your life – ex-girl- and boyfriends and the teachers you loved and hated,” Alexander said, in an e-mailed message. “The extra pounds and grey hair.  It will be a blast.”

$250,000 Reward To Find Papa John’s 1972 Z-28 Camaro

August 4, 2009

Papa John Schnattner started the Papa John’s Pizza empire in 1984 when he sold his beloved 1972 Camaro Z-28 for $2800 to open his first pizza joint in Indiana.  Now 25 years later he wants that Camaro back – badly.  $250,000 badly.

Not a car that would normally bring that kind of money, this Z-28 has great sentimental value for obvious reasons to Papa John.  The effort began with a $25,000 reward, but that quickly was increased by 10 times when all the interest and leads started coming in.  Not only is Schnattner putting up significant cash to find the car, he has developed an entire marketing program around it!

Schnattner, 47, is currently traveling the country promoting his ‘Papa John’s Camaro Chase Contest’.  It began on May 27th and will end on August 31st.  This contest is complete with it’s own website at www.papasroadtrip.com where you can keep up with Papa John as he travels the country looking for his prized Camaro that he originally bought for $1,600 when he was a 16 year old dishwasher.  The Camaro got him through high school and college and when sold that cash was used to launch a pizza empire that is now 3,400 restaurants strong.

Should you find this special Camaro and wish to cash in, there are several important steps you must take.  You must show proof that it is the official vehicle with the title proof and the list of all the names of past owners, including John Schnatter and a photo of the Camaro as outlined on the website.

As Schnatter travels the country, he brings along a replica of the ’72 Camaro.  He states “It’s not a car that someone would easily turn over to the scrap heap.  The real point is, while this car may not be a true classic, it’s near and dear to my heart.  It would mean so much if I had any part of that car back.  Once people hear the story of why I sold the car, it resonates with them.  They understand that sometimes, pursuing your dream requires a heart-wrenching sacrifice…not to mention a lot of hard work and perseverance.”

Also in support of the Road Trip, Papa John’s developed an “augmented reality” icon of Schnatter’s Camaro on the bottom of more than 30 million pizza boxes across the country. ‘Augmented Reality’ is a new marketing frontier that features an online application that allows the user to interact in real-time with computer generated imagery. Available for review at www.papasroadtrip.com , when the icon is recognized by a webcam, customers may virtually take part in Papa’s Road Trip by driving Schnatter’s Camaro and along the way be granted exclusive discounts on future Papa John’s purchases, displayed on billboards along the virtual road.

Keep your eyes open for a ’72 Camaro and here are the original specs of Papa John’s Z-28 Camaro

Apple releases iPhone OS 3.0.1, Fixes SMS Vulnerability

August 3, 2009

Apple has released the iPhone OS 3.0.1 Software Update for the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. According to the release notes, the new update fixes the SMS vulnerability publicized yesterday by cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller and Colin Mulliner which would allow a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts to give a hacker nearly complete control over the phone’s functions, including dialing the phone, accessing the Internet, turning on the camera and/or microphone, and sending more text messages to further propagate the hack. iPhone OS 3.0.1 is available now through the Update feature in iTunes.

Inside Starbucks New Stealth Store: 15th Avenue E Coffee and Tea

August 1, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, there was a lot of buzz generated by the news that Starbucks was looking to explore new store layouts and designs and even considering dropping the brand name from certain locations. The plan is to create new environments that will try to re-explore the spirit of a traditional coffeehouse including the sale of wine and beer plus playing host to live music and poetry readings.

Last Friday, the Seattle based corporation opened 15th Avenue E Coffee and Tea – the first of these ’stealth stores’.

The look is vastly different from the the brand’s standard. 15th Avenue E Coffee and Tea has a rustic but modern mix of wood and tin plus a celebration of coffee beans and tea leaves. Espressos will be made using a manual machine. If you didn’t know it was Starbucks, you’d think you found a hidden neighborhood gem. And once you know it is Starbucks you have to give the brand a lot of kudos for giving their cafe experience a much needed jolt of caffeine. (Reprinted from psfk.com)
