Stephen King’s Cell TV Miniseries?

July 13, 2009

Stephen King’s popular horror novel Cell was originally supposed to be adapted for the big screen by director Eli Roth. Now that Roth has dropped out of the project, it seems that Cell will become a television miniseries instead of a feature film.

According to Fangoria, director John Harrison, who adapted Clive Barker’s Book of Blood, is currently writing a four hour telefilm based on the contents of the novel. The story finds America being transformed into a population of mindless, rampaging killers after a signal is sent through a series of cell phone networks. The project is currently being shopped to various channels.

At this time, Harrison is not set to direct Cell, but has stated that he would love to jump aboard the project if the opportunity arose.

The Beatles Box of Vision

July 13, 2009

Box of Vision

With less than two months until the Beatles’ remastered catalog is reissued on September 9th, the Fab Four and Apple Corps. have announced a deluxe companion set called Box Of Vision ($80) for fans to store the upcoming releases. The Box of Vision isn’t just a storage vessel, however: The set will also feature a 200-page LP-sized book featuring all of the Beatles artwork — covers, back covers, gatefolds and inserts from both the U.S. and U.K. releases — covering every album from Please Please Me to the Beatles Love compilation.

An additional book in the Box of Vision will also house the Beatles’ “Catalography,” featuring all the track lists and other information from every release, plus a new essay from Beatles historian Bruce Spizer. But the real highlight is the storage book, which gives fans an eye-catching alternative to just plopping their reissued albums on the shelf. The Box of Vision was conceived to allow the digipaks housing the reissued albums to be stored within the box. Please note that the Beatle’s CD’s and booklets are not included in the package.

Anthony Bourdain Declares 3 Little Pigs The Greatest Sandwich in America

July 12, 2009

In the latest episode of No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain went to Chicago and visited the Silver Palm restaurant. He had the Three Little Pigs Sandwich: smoked ham, a breaded pork cutlet, two strips of bacon, and two fried eggs, blanketed in a thick coat of gruyere, all on a brioche bun.

Bourdain is blown away, and drops tons of praise: “This is a work of genius, in an evil way…. A two-fisted symphony of pork, cheese, fat, and starch… that sandwich is the greatest sandwich in America. This is the apex of the sandwich-making art… the sandwich that dreams are made of.”

The Married Life Montage in Pixar’s Up

July 12, 2009

There’s a short new article appearing in the Entertainment section of the Los Angeles Times specifically about the poignant, critically-acclaimed four-minute-long montage that anchors Carl’s story early on in Up (termed “Married Life” on the Up soundtrack).

Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera share their thoughts on the various aspects of the montage, such as the inclusion of the heartrending scene of Ellie crying at the doctors’ office after having a miscarriage and the use of particular colors to assist in illustrating the various stages of Carl and Ellie’s life together.

Ryan Reynolds is the Green Lantern

July 11, 2009

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of Green Lantern, getting the starring role in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended. Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

M.C. Escher Exhibit At The Portland Art Museum

July 10, 2009

escher

Printmaker Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) created visual puzzles that astonish with their mathematical rigor and their patent absurdity. This exhibition traces the development of the artist’s work from his early stylized depictions of landscape and architecture to his later use of repeated geometric patterns, stimulated by his visit in 1936 to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. There he discovered Moorish decorative tiles with their purely abstract designs. By adding the suggestion of human or animal forms to such logical patterns, Escher began creating imaginary images in which one form morphs into another. Exploiting the potential for visual paradox of reversals of figure and ground, manipulations of perspective, and shifts between spatial illusion and the flatness of the picture surface, he created virtual worlds.

relativity

Drawn from the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum and from two private Oregon collections, the exhibition is comprised of some 120 objects, including material never before presented at the Museum. The exhibition features prints in the media most favored by Escher: woodcut, wood engraving, linocut, and lithography. By including drawings as well as printing blocks created in preparation for several of the prints on display, the exhibition illuminates Escher’s working process and the sweep of his graphic production.

sphere

The Virtual Worlds exhibit  at the Portland Art Museum includes many of the iconic Escher prints from the late 1930s through the 1960s, such as Day and Night, Ascending and Descending, and Belvedere. It will run until September 13th, 2009.

MC

If you would like to learn more about the artist M.C. Escher, then I highly recommend reading Doris Schattschneider’s classic M. C. Escher: Visions of Symmetry ($40). This gorgeous coffee table book is the most penetrating study of Escher’s work in existence, and the one most admired by mathematicians and scientists. The 384 page book includes many of Escher’s masterworks, as well as hundreds of lesser-known examples of his work. It also features an illustrated epilogue by the author that reveals new information about Escher’s inspiration and shows how his ideas of symmetry have influenced mathematicians, computer scientists, and contemporary artists. Visions of Symmetry is a trip into the mind of a creator who continues to captivate the world today.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League

July 9, 2009

Humans have been battling each other with swords, sticks, lightsabers, and other long staff-like things for pretty much as long as they’ve been around, but we rarely get a chance to practice this ancient art in the modern age of computers, cars, and strip clubs. Which is why the Cardboard Tube Fighting League is so great. The rules are simple: grab your tube, engage your foe, and the first one to break their tube loses. It’s a great way to have fun while honoring your primal urges, and with upcoming events in cities across the country, there’s no reason not to go forth and do battle.

Michael Moore has titled his upcoming documentary Capitalism: A Love Story, which addresses the causes of the global economic meltdown, reports Variety.

“It will be the perfect date movie,” Moore said in an announcement Wednesday. “It’s got it all — lust, passion, romance and 14,000 jobs being eliminated every day. It’s a forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name. Heck, let’s just say it: It’s capitalism.”

The film is described as focusing on “the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world.”

Eternal Moonwalk

July 8, 2009

Eternal Moonwalk is a video slideshow of people, animals and inanimate objects doing Michael Jackson’s signature move. Each video clip is about 6 seconds long and a counter keeps track of the number of meters traveled as you watch. A continuous music loop plays as a soundtrack and you can click on a series of buttons to add the various exclamations that Jackson was famous for.

There are currently over a thousand video clips on the site, each with a unique number. When you see one you really like, take note of the number. Then, whenever you want to see that clip again, enter the number in the search box and it will go into the queue to play among the next few videos. You can also submit your own moonwalk video to add to the collection.
