March 5, 2009

The entire cast of the popular 90s sitcom – Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards – will be appearing on Curb Your Enthusiasm in a multi-episode story arc.

While no reunion date has been set, when it does happen, it will be the first time in 11 years that the cast will appear together.

The arc will be a continuation of co-creator Larry David’s relationship with the characters, who have appeared individually on the show, but not together. (From PerezHilton.com)

Slumdog Millionaire DVD Announced

March 4, 2009

Fox Home Entertainment has announced DVD ($29.98) and Blu-ray ($39.98) releases of Slumdog Millionaire for the 31st March. Extras will include a commentary by Director Danny Boyle and Actor Dev Patel, a second commentary by Producer Christian Colson and Writer Simon Beaufoy, a Slumdog Dreams: Danny Boyle & The Making of Slumdog Millionaire featurette, 12 deleted scenes, and a Slumdog Cutdown feature. The Blu-ray release will include all of the above, plus a From Script To Screen: Toilet Scene feature, an Indian Short Film (“Manjha”), a Bombay Liquid Dance Music Video, and a digital copy.

Although I’ve seen some very good movies last year, I can say with confidence that Slumdog Millionaire is the one that I’ve enjoyed the most. In the first couple of minutes of the Oscar winning film we learn several things. First, Jamal, a Muslim who is a product of the slums, is a participant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”? Second, he is suspected of cheating and is subjected to horrific torture at the hands of the police. Gradually, after having failed to elicit confessions of how he had cheated, Jamal related, while they all watch a video of his television appearance, how he knew the answers of each of the questions. The result is a series of flashbacks that essentially tell the story of Jamal’s life and his relations with the two most important relationships in his life, that of his street smart but dangerous brother Salim, and Latika, his love interest. These scenes are set in some of the most horrific squalor that one can imagine. It may seem unrealistic that someone could come out of such wretched life experiences as relatively unscarred as Jamal appears to be, but that is in part because at heart the film; it  is a fairy tale and love story.

ABC Cancels Life on Mars

March 3, 2009

I’m bummed because I really enjoyed this show. ABC has decided to end “Life on Mars” after a single year — but in an unusual move, the network will keep the show on the air through the end of its full run, reports Variety.

That will give the series a rare opportunity to sign off with a proper finale, wrapping up the series’ core mystery.

Network insiders said they were fans of the show and pleased with its creative chops — but that the ratings ultimately didn’t warrant a second season. Five more episodes of “Life on Mars” remain out of the series’ 17-episode order. As previously announced, the show’s Wednesday 10 p.m. slot will go to newcomer “The Unusuals” in April.

“Life on Mars” stars Jason O’Mara, Gretchen Mol, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli and Jonathan Murphy.

Spinal Tap Announce “Unwigged” Tour

March 3, 2009

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are leaving the costumes and wigs at home but will still play the music of their cinematic alter egos Spinal Tap, as well as the Folksmen from “A Mighty Wind” on a 30-date concert tour this spring.

The six-week theater trek, dubbed Unwigged & Unplugged: An Evening with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, kicks off April 17 in Vancouver and runs through May 31 in Milwaukee. Tickets go on sale starting Friday (March 6).

“We’ve never gone out as ourselves,” Shearer said Monday during a webcast teleconference at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. “It’s interesting; after playing characters all these years, we’re having meetings trying to figure out who WE are…We have to ask ourselves, ‘What would WE do?’”

McKean, meanwhile, referred to outing as “a non-pony dog show,” while Guest said the trio had started planning the tour “a couple years ago.”

The shows’ repertoire will be drawn from the two Spinal Tap albums — “This is Spinal Tap” and “Break Like the Wind” — as well as the soundtrack to the Guest-directed “A Mighty Wind.” At the press conference Guest, McKean and Shearer played a short set that included Spinal Tap’s “Hell Hole” and “Sex Farm” and “Old Joe’s Place” from “A Mighty Wind.”

The trio is also in the midst of recording a new Spinal Tap album that will be released May 26 and feature the “original studio versions” of the live songs on “This is Spinal Tap” and some new songs — including the ironically titled “Short and Sweet,” a 20-minute epic to which they’re “adding stellar guitar player (guest) as we speak,” according to McKean.

Some bonus material will likely be available for digital download only.

McKean said the partners are “trying to figure out a way to do (Spinal Tap’s bass opus) ‘Big Bottom’ on three acoustic guitars” and said some incarnation of “Stonehenge” “is possible.”

Tour information is available at www.unwigged.com, while www.spinaltap.com is also being reactivated.

Prince Is Coming To A Target Near You

March 3, 2009

Prince is releasing a three-disc CD set through the retailer at the end of this month. The set will include two new albums — “LOtUSFLOW3R” and “MPLSoUND” — as well as a third by his new artist, Bria Valente, for the price of $11.98. Prince is just the latest music legend to release new music exclusively through a major retailer. AC/DC and the Eagles were among the acts who sold millions of CDs through their partnership with Wal-Mart. Prince has released his recent CDs through major labels, but they were one-album deals that gave him the flexibility to go elsewhere when the project was done. The CD set will be on sale at Target and its Web site on March 29.

Watchmen’ Easter Eggs

March 3, 2009

Zach Snyder’s Watchmen is not only set during the decade of greed, but that it breathlessly captures Alan Moore’s pop-culture graphic novel by cramming more easter eggs (an intentional hidden message, in-joke or feature in an object such as a movie) into every frame than perhaps any movie before it.

Nowadays, we have DVDs and Internet screen grabs to help us keep up with Snyder’s amazingly detailed, frantically faithful “Watchmen” world. But if you want to catch all the in-jokes and references the first time you see the movie, you can start HERE.

Walt Disney’s Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition DVD

March 2, 2009

Pinocchio was the first movie that I ever saw and it left an indelible mark on me that fueled my love for animation, classic Disney storytelling and the movie theater experience. The film has been plucked out of the Disney vaults and remastered in a gorgeous 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition which is scheduled to be release on March 10, 2009.  Available for the first time in high-definition and 2-Disc DVD, Pinocchio is brilliantly restored with enhanced picture and sound. Walt Disney’s second animated feature, Pinocchio debuted 70 years ago with vibrant hand drawn animation and a touching story that made it an instant classic. Introducing audiences to the magical favorites of Pinocchio, Geppetto the puppet maker and the Blue Fairy, Pinocchio also marks the screen debut of a character who became one of Disney’s signatures: the fast-talking, wisecracking Jiminy Cricket.

The DVD is loaded with hours of bonus features that include:

• Pinocchio’s Matter of Facts – - Learn fun facts about Pinocchio and other related subjects as you watch the movie.

• Audio Commentary — An all-new audio commentary with Leonard Maltin, Eric Goldberg and J. B. Kaufman.

•   Disney Song Selection — Select this option to sing along with favorite songs as the lyrics appear onscreen.

 • No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio – - Witness the behind-the scenes magic that transformed Carlo Collodi’s popular book into a classic animated film.

• Deleted Scenes —

The Story of the Grandfather Tree – - Kindly Geppetto tells Pinocchio about the Great Pine Tree from which Pinocchio is descended.

In The Belly Of The Whale – - The most elaborate of Pinocchio’s deleted scenes that remain in the Disney Archives, these recently discovered storyboards reveal a different version of Geppetto inside Monstro.

• Alternate Ending – - A recently uncovered set of small storyboard panels reveal plans for a different version of Pinocchio becoming a real boy.

• The Sweat Box – - The Sweatbox was a small projection room at the Disney studio where Walt critiqued story reels, rough animation, and dailies of films in progress with his anxious artists.  This piece traces the history of the Sweatbox and brings to life this important part of Walt Disney’s artistic process.

• Live Action Reference Footage

• Pinocchio Art Galleries

• Deleted Songs – - An audio collection of period “pop” recordings of songs that not used in the final film.

• Pinocchio Puzzles – - Hosted by Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio’s Puzzles is a multi-tiered Puzzle game that contains six unique wooden puzzles for the viewer to assemble. Each puzzle forms an image from the film that comes to life once they are complete.

The entire family will enjoy this universally loved film that taught us all to wish upon a star.

Stephen King’s Bag of Bones To Begin Filming This Summer

March 2, 2009

The film version of Stephen King’s novel “Bag of Bones” may be shot in the author’s home state of Maine. Director Mick Garris and producer Mark Sennet are planning to meet Tuesday with Gov. John Baldacci and other officials about the possibility of expanding financial incentives available from the state. Maine film industry advocates say “Bag of Bones” will be a $20 million production, and half of the budget would be spent in Maine. Filming could begin as early as this summer. The novel is set in a lakeside summer home in a remote part of Maine where an author suffering from writer’s block dredges up dark secrets following his wife’s death.
