Stephen King’s “It” Rises Again As A Feature Film

March 12, 2009

Warner Bros. is bringing Stephen King’s landmark horror novel “It” to the big screen. Screenwriter Dave Kajganich will adapt the story, which follows a group of kids called the Losers Club. They encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise. When the creature resurfaces, the kids are called upon to regroup, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle. The novel is set in 1958 and 1985, but the feature version will be set in the present day. “It” was the best-selling book of 1986 and in 1990 was turned into an ABC miniseries that starred John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Tim Reid, Annette O’Toole and Richard Thomas. Tim Curry played Pennywise. The screen rights have bounced around since then. Kajganich has made a name for himself with his dark materials, writing “The Invasion” for Warners and snagging gigs such as the “Pet Semetary” remake. He recently was hired to write New Line’s “Escape From New York” remake.

The Cardboard Office

March 12, 2009

Nothing is a new commercial creative agency in Amsterdam. While the city houses the agency in a fairly unconventional building – a nineteenth-century church – the Nothing office is an unusual construction too, in that it is built almost entirely out of cardboard.

The Nothing team took the idea behind the company name (taking nothing and turning it into something) as the starting point for the physical design of the office; which included creating walls, signage, beams, tables, shelving and even a set of stairs out of cardboard.

Apparently, the walls will double as a blank canvas with visitors encouraged to leave their mark on the surfaces.

LOST: A Major Character Will Die This Season

March 12, 2009

E! Online is reporting that a major character death is coming this season. This is in addition to earlier internet rumors that a less major character would be leaving the show.

Collect yourselves, then read on if you want to know more….

Here’s what E! Online can tell you about this death:

• A current series regular is getting killed before the end of Season 5.

• The character who will die is someone who is much-loved by many fans.

• This is a real leaving-the-show death, à la Shannon or Charlie, not a quick-fix time-travel death like Jeremy Bentham/John Locke.

• The character getting killed off is NOT the Evangeline Lilly character Kate Austen.

After taking a week off, LOST returns with a new episode next Wednesday, March 18th, at 9 pm/ET on ABC.

Peanuts And Plungers

March 12, 2009

Ever wonder what instrument was used to make that funny sound of the adults talking on the Peanuts cartoons? It’s a trombone with the rubber end of a toilet plunger over the instrument’s bell. By opening and closing the plunger with the hand, thereby allowing more or less air out of the trombone’s bell, the trombonist is able to get a wah-wah effect, which the directors were able to use to mimic the rise and fall of our voice patterns, exaggerated, of course.

My Morning Jacket Announce Live EP

March 11, 2009

The EP entitled ‘Celebración De La Ciudad Natal’ will be released on April 18 and will be available exclusively in independent retail stores.

It features seven tracks which were recorded at two Louisville shows the band played last year: an in-store performance at local record shop Ear-X-Tacy, and a performance at local landmark Waterfront Park.

The band say they are “excited to make this a special release that you can only get at your favorite local independent record store, as now more than ever we all need to take the time to celebrate what our favorite local record stores and businesses mean to us – the value of community/human-to-human, non-internet related physical and spiritual contact, and supporting the hardworking people in your community who strive everyday to keep it unique and keep it local.”

The tracklisting is:

‘Evil Urges’
‘Highly Suspicious’
‘Gideon’
‘Where To Begin’
‘Librarian’
‘Phone Went West’
‘Dondante’

The Periodic Table of Typefaces

March 11, 2009

The Periodic Table of Typefaces is obviously in the style of all the thousands of over-sized Periodic Table of Elements posters hanging in schools and homes around the world.  This particular table lists 100 of the most popular, influential and notorious typefaces today.

As with traditional periodic tables, this table presents the subject matter grouped categorically.  The Table of Typefaces groups by families and classes of typefaces:  san-serif, serif, script, blackletter, glyphic, display, grotesque, realist, didone, garalde, geometric, humanist, slab-serif and mixed.

Each cell of the table lists the typeface and a one or two character “symbol” (made up by me simply based on logic), the designer, year designed and a ranking of 1 through 100.
