Turn Your iPhone Into A Wireless Drive With DataCase

One feature of many other handheld devices is the ability to use the device as a portable flash drive to move data between a couple of computers. The iPhone doesn’t have that ability now, but will on July 28, 2008.That’s the day that DataCase will be available in the iTunes App Store for $6.99. From Veiosoft, DataCase works with Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) and Bonjour to allow any Mac on the same network as your phone to transfer files to and from it.

Your iPhone appears as a Mac volume, so you just drag-and-drop data you want to take with you. If you’re a Windows or Linux user, DataCase gives you the same capabilities from your iPhone using HTTP and FTP.

In case you want to view those files you’ve moved to your iPhone, DataCase lets you read Microsoft Office, PDF, and text files. You can create up to 16 different volumes on your iPhone, each of which can be set up with read/write/browse permissions. Volumes can be made invisible to protect data from unauthorized people or iPhone snatchers.

This is an innovative app that a lot of iPhone owners are going to want.

Feist on Sesame Street

Feist will appear on the 39th season of Sesame Street singing a modified version of “1,2,3,4”. The lyrics of “1,2,3,4” were altered so that the song is about counting chickens, penguins, and monsters, rather than love, or whatever it was about. The 39th season of Sesame Street premieres August 11th and will feature appearances from A-Listers like David Beckham and Jessica Alba.

 

Rock Band 2 Soundtrack Announced Today

Harmonix, today revealed at the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit the song set list for Rock Band 2, the next evolution of the groundbreaking Rock Band music platform. The Rock Band 2 soundtrack will feature over 100 songs with over 80 songs on disc plus an additional 20 bonus tracks which will be made available for free download this fall.

• After 14 years since Guns N’ Roses last official music release, Axl Rose selects Rock Band 2 to debut official new track “Shackler’s Revenge” from the highly-anticipated album Chinese Democracy.

• Rock Band 2 is the first and only video game to feature the music of AC/DC. It includes their epic rock anthem, “Let There Be Rock.”

• For the first time ever, music from American music icon, Bob Dylan, is featured in a video game with “Tangled Up In Blue.”

A More Mature David Sedaris?

Pick up David Sedaris’ new book and you’re staring at death. If the van Gogh painting of a skeleton gracing the cover doesn’t say it clearly enough, the fact that the skull is smoking a cigarette should.

The image, from a postcard Sedaris picked up in a museum store, hints at the themes that set this sixth collection of essays apart from previous Sedaris books. This is an older, more thoughtful writer who, after years of proffering stinging barbs, cigarette perpetually in hand, realizes he’s not immortal.

So he quits smoking. Eases up on the sarcasm. Considers the hard knocks dealt to some of the unfortunate misfits who cross his path — after ripping them to shreds. And he just plain obsesses about death.

“To be young and bratty, that’s OK. It’s funny,” the 51-year-old author says in an interview with The Associated Press. “To be old and bratty. …” Well, that’s simply wrong.

Devotees who got hooked on Sedaris’ biting humor in “SantaLand Diaries” — the 1992 essay about his stint working as an elf during Christmas at a Macy’s department store that launched him into national prominence — will feel a change in tone.

He’s still the funniest guy around, hilarious enough to make you want to call your friends, book in hand, and read pieces out loud trying to mimic his deadpan delivery. He hasn’t lost the gift of cracking open mundane frustrations, such as sitting next to an annoying person during a long plane ride, to reveal the gleaming kernel of absurdity.

But this more mature Sedaris will surprise readers by being kinder. More considerate. By pausing, in the midst of tearing apart some bystander, to mellowing down — Sedaris says he’s being “fairer” — comes with a realization that he’s vulnerable as well.

“It’s ‘Golden Rule’ writing,” he says. “I think, ‘What if it was about me?’ “

In “Memento Mori,” his obsession with death — and with Sedaris, nothing that could become an obsession worth mining for laughs is allowed to remain a passing thought — is overt. He describes his antagonistic relationship with a skeleton he bought as a gift for his long-suffering partner, Hugh. From the corner where it hangs in their bedroom, the 300-year-old body talks to him. Like Edgar Allan Poe’s raven, the skeleton has only one thought:

“You are going to die.”

Begging, pleading, offering to help it understand the wonders of modernity — for example, television — or trying to convince the ancient being that he invented television himself to comfort the old and sick wins Sedaris only a small measure of forgiveness.

“You are going to die … someday,” the skeleton concedes.

The book wraps up, fittingly, with “The Smoking Section,” which delves into the painful details of Sedaris’ successful effort to quit smoking.

Tallying up the cost, he figures it cost him about $20,000 to quit, between tickets to Tokyo — where he chose to go cold turkey — hotels, nicotine patches and the rest.

He calculates he’ll recoup the cost if he manages to live another 17 cigarette-free years — writing all the while, he hopes. (Reprinted from CNN.com)

 

Trailer for Ricky Gervais’ Ghost Town

DreamWorks Pictures has revealed the new trailer for David Koepp’s comedy Ghost Town.

The comedy centers on a dentist (Ricky Gervais) who has a near-death experience during routine surgery and gains the ability to see dead people who ask him for help in contacting the living.

Greg Kinnear, Kristen Wiig, Tea Leoni and Billy Campbell co-star in the September 19 release.

Apple: 1 Million iPhone 3Gs Sold Over Weekend

Apple has announced that it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday, just three days after its launch on July 11. The phone is currently available in 21 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US, and will go on sale in France on July 17. “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

iPhone App Store Hits 10 Million Downloads

iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than 10 million applications from the App Store since its launch late last week, Apple has announced. The store, which launched with over 500 applications, now offers more than 800 apps, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10. “The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Jack Black Set For School of Rock 2

A few weeks ago screenwriter Mike White admitted that he’d just finished and turned in a School of Rock sequel script. Now it looks like the movie is official. Variety says that not only is Paramount Pictures developing a School of Rock 2, but they’ve already got Jack Black back on board in the movie’s lead role.

 

They’re calling it School of Rock 2: America Rocks. In the sequel, Black’s rock and roll teacher character leads a bunch of summer school students on a cross-country field trip to explore the history of rock.

 

Curb Your Enthusiasm Will Return Next Year

Larry David is bringing back “Curb Your Enthusiasm” for a seventh season, HBO said on Thursday.

The premium cable network hopes the latest installment of the edgy comedy series will premiere at the beginning of 2009, marking a gap of more than a year since the sixth season ended in November 2007.

David, the show’s star and creator, is “excited about it,” HBO West Coast president Michael Lombardo said during the network’s portion of the Television Critics Assn.’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills.
